Dartmoor National Park has won an appeal against a ruling that had banned wild camping in the area, brought forth by a wealthy landowner.
Camping had been considered permissible under the Dartmoor Commons Act since 1985, but a judge ruled otherwise in January, making it the only place in England where camping required no landowner permission. The case centered on whether wild camping fell under the category of open-air recreation. The court of appeal panel unanimously ruled that wild camping did indeed count as open-air recreation and should be allowed on the commons. The decision restores the tradition of backpack camping, a popular pastime on Dartmoor, and is seen as a victory for public access to these natural spaces.
